Spring into Summer

Spring into Summer

Knitted dresses, cashmere sweaters and statement jackets are stacked away now that winter is behind us. Sheer maxi dresses, printed shorts and cute cover-ups are in, as we spring into summer. What about the Makeup though? Our Makeup kits and routines have to transition as well from winter to summer and reflect the needs and trends of the season. Heavy foundations have to be replaced with sheer light-weight formulae, tinted moisturisers anyone? And oooooh the colors! Haven’t you noticed that colors look better with a bit of sun, especially the bright perky colors? Think fuchsia lips, coral cheeks, you get the drift. It's time to lay the darker, richer hues to rest for a bit. I’d like to welcome the summer with a post on the essentials in my makeup kit this season. These are going to stay with me for every look, this summer.

Sunscreen

Unless you want to be a victim of hyperpigmentation by the end of summer, please don’t step out without a generous layer of sunscreen.  Although sunscreens are a staple around the year for skin protection, our skin is at a higher risk of damage during summer. So, be sure to layer them on. I have been using Kiehl’s Ultra `Light Daily UV Defense for my face and Neutrogena Dry-Touch Sunscreen for the rest of my body. Both are quick to absorb and are super light on the skin without leaving any ashy/white residue. Do apply your sunscreen at-least five minutes before makeup and about twenty prior to sun exposure for best results.

Primer

I have experienced the miracle of Primers while dressing up brides in Kerala. If makeup has remained intact for half a day in extreme humid conditions, then you know that you have a winner in the base. I do not use primers as much in Bangalore, but as the temperature soars, it’s a must-have in my makeup kit. Primers holds makeup in place and prolong its staying power and are definitely the way to go in summer.  Laura Mercier's  range of primers are my all-time favourites; Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer is good for those who are looking for an oil-free alternative.

Bronzer

Adding that perfect warmth to the skin is what summer makeup is all about. Powder bronzers with varying shades, those when blended together giving a warm glow is ideal and that’s when Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Bronze is the perfect choice. Applied on top of the cheekbones, it gives you that perfect bronzy glow. If you are into matte bronzers, consider one which is just a shade darker than your skin-tone so that the glow is more of a sun kissed gold than burnt orange.

Colors

If winter is all about dark and grey, summer is for brights and colors. Just like your wardrobes, your make-up palettes need a makeover too. This is the season to paint gorgeous washes of pinks and yellows on to your lids. One of my favorites is a gradient look with spring/summer colors that work well together. These summery palettes are perfect for adding a youthful glow. If yellow is too bright for you, look out for subtle tones of the shade or even subdued tones of gold. Corals, pinks and peaches are perfect for your pout. On Aaditi, I have created a gradient lip with two tones of pink; the deeper shade concentrated in the center of her lips and the lighter shade around. Make sure to fill in your makeup bag with colors that spell fresh this summer.

Setting Spray

So you have your flawless makeup on, spelling summer in every detail. And then you step outside only to have your makeup beginning to melt in minutes. Using the right primer is going to prevent that melt-down to a great degree but to seal the deal, get your hands on a good make-up setting spray. I endorse All Nighter by Urban Decay all the way. This beauty has a patented Temperature Control Technology which lowers the temperature of your makeup to keep it in place even in hot and humid weather. No wonder, it's an award winner. And I have noticed that the make up sets in well on the skin with a few spritzes.

Stock up on these essentials if you may as the summer looks like it's here to stay. Hmm, that rhymed :-) I am off to Dubai in a few days people to enjoy what's left of the gorgeous weather there and of course to meet up with a few of you lovelies :-) I will be soon posting dates of my trip to Cochin in April so that you can make your reservations for the private grooming sessions. Happy Summer ladies xoxo
